Q. Is it possible to tour campus?

A. Yes. There are two types of student-led walking campus tours offered through the Visitor's Center: public and private.  Tours for prospective students can also be arranged through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions by calling (574) 631-7505.

Public tours are intended for small family groups, business travelers, or general interest visitors; individual parties should be no larger than 10 people. Tours are offered at various times throughout the year. See the schedule below.

Private tours are intended for large families, school groups, University academic departments, conferences, bus/motorcoach/motorhome tours, or others not covered by the public tour. Private tours must be scheduled in advance and are subject to tour guide availability. One tour guide is required for every 25 persons, and there is a fee of $30 per guide. Private tours can be scheduled by calling (574) 631-5726.

Q. How much does it cost to take the tour?

A. Our general public tours are offered for free. Private tours require a minimum fee of $30.00 per 25 people.

Q. How long does a tour last?

A. The average tour will run between an hour and fifteen minutes to an hour and a half.

Q. Who leads the campus tours?

A. All tours are led by Notre Dame students who represent a cross-section of the campus community. Guides can be freshmen through seniors as well as graduate students from across the country, with academic majors ranging from English to accounting to chemical engineering. They are involved in a wide variety of activities outside of their work at the Visitors Center, with many being involved in liturgical ministry, community service, residence hall governance, or campus clubs.

Q. What does the campus tour entail?

A. The tour leaves from the Eck Visitors Center, and will give a general historical and social overview to life at Notre Dame. Most tours will include visits to the Grotto, Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Main Building (the Golden Dome), and "Touchdown Jesus." Our campus tour does not enter Notre Dame Stadium but Stadium tours are offered through the Athletics office here: http://www.und.com/tours/. Because of campus construction and other University events, we reserve the right to alter any tour route or sights seen. (Please note bus tours around the Basilica and Grotto are not permitted.)

Q. Is it possible to do a driving tour of campus?

A. No. The University campus is a pedestrian zone, and all tours are walking tours. The average tour will cover approximately two miles of walking. A limited number of wheelchairs are available at the Visitors Center for those who are unable to walk; please inquire at the front desk prior to the start of the tour, and provide a valid driver's license.

Q. Is it possible to schedule an evening tour?

A. Private tours can be scheduled during the evening hours based on tour guide availability.

Q. Where can I park?

A. Cars can park in the visitors parking lot on Holy Cross Drive (East of the Eck Visitors Center and south of Legends
Restaurant).  Buses can park in the lane just south of the Visitors Center for loading and unloading, but should park in Parking Lot C1 (south of the Joyce Center).

Q. What is the weather like at Notre Dame? How should I dress for the tour?

A. Notre Dame is located in Northern Indiana, so our weather is very seasonal (and sometimes unpredictable). It can fluctuate from sunny summer days in the 80s and cold, snowy winter days often below freezing. It is advisable to check the forecast prior to your visit and plan your wardrobe accordingly. Weather aside, it is always a good idea to wear comfortable shoes for the tour.

Q. Where can I eat on campus?

A. Campus is dotted with eateries that are open to the public. LaFortune Student Center, located in the center of campus, houses a Burger King, Subway, Taco Bell, Starbucks, and a small convenience store. Meals for large groups can also be arranged at South Dining Hall, but need to be coordinated with the dining hall directly by calling 574-631-6147. Please consult the Notre Dame Food Services website for a complete listing of all campus dining facilities at http://food.nd.edu/.
